How to Control External Monitor Brightness on Windows

Windows will not do this on its own, so the job splits into two parts: make sure the monitor accepts remote brightness commands, then install software that sends them.

Step 1: Enable DDC/CI on the monitor

If there is no such entry, the monitor either always has it enabled or does not support it. More detail on the DDC/CI page.

  1. Open the monitor's on-screen menu with its physical buttons.
  2. Look under Setup, System, Others or OSD Settings for DDC/CI.
  3. Set it to On, then exit and save.

Step 2: Use a direct connection while testing

  • Connect HDMI or DisplayPort straight from the graphics card to the monitor.
  • Remove adapters, splitters and KVM switches for the first test.
  • If you use a dock, test with and without it to see whether it blocks the channel.

Step 3: Install a brightness utility

Pick one of the two applications on our download page: the Microsoft Store version or Twinkle Tray. Install only one to avoid conflicts.

Step 4: Adjust and verify

  1. Open the utility's panel and confirm the monitor is listed.
  2. Drag its slider and watch the picture change.
  3. Set a comfortable level for the room you are in.
  4. Add keyboard shortcuts if the app supports them.

If nothing happens

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this work with any monitor?

Most monitors from the last decade support DDC/CI, but not all. Support lives in the monitor firmware, so results vary by model.

Will it work through a USB-C dock?

Sometimes. Docks vary in whether they pass the monitor control channel through, so test a direct cable to compare.
