Backlight control versus software dimming
Lowering the backlight is the better option when it is available: less light, less power, no loss of contrast. Software dimming reduces the signal or paints a dark overlay, so it works everywhere but slightly flattens the image.
Most users want backlight control first and a software dimmer only as a fallback or for going darker than the panel's minimum.
